there's nothing like a USA-specific celebration to make you unbelievably homesick while abroad. i was in western turkey for 2 weeks and fourth of july happened to overlap the night before i was leaving; turkey is absolutely amazing (the best place i've ever been-- yawl, the beaches are unbelievable) and a lot of that has to do with how different it is: mosques & minarets, fairy chimneys & hot springs, bazaars & motorbike weirdos, etc. etc. the food is amazing (and weird: ayran is, something else)--- baklava and tea and doner kebabs every day? okay, uh-huh, yeah, most definitely. and celebrating the fourth (i think it was technically the fifth of july) in turkey wasn't bad at all--- there were fireworks for some reason, so me & all the screaming jive turks ate watermelon and got gross drunk on yeni raki (çok güzel, bembeyaz!)
